One of the best things about living in Gwalior is how many great places are within a short drive. Whether you want history, nature, spirituality or simply a change of scene, there is a weekend escape for you. Here are seven favourites among our customers, with distances and tips.

1. Orchha: palaces on the Betwa (120 km)

Orchha is the perfect slow weekend. Explore the Raja Mahal and Jahangir Mahal, join the evening aarti at the Ram Raja Temple and watch the sunset over the royal chhatris. Stay overnight at a riverside property and enjoy a quiet morning by the Betwa. Many travellers add Jhansi Fort on the way.

Best for: couples, history lovers and photographers.

2. Shivpuri: lakes and forests (120 km)

The former summer capital of the Scindias is green, calm and full of lakes. Take a safari in Madhav National Park, visit the marble Scindia chhatris and relax by Sakhya Sagar. In the monsoon, the Bhadaiya Kund waterfall is a highlight.

Best for: families and nature lovers.

3. Agra: the Taj Mahal and beyond (120 km)

A classic for a reason. Spend Saturday at the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort, and Sunday at Fatehpur Sikri. Remember that the Taj is closed on Fridays.

Best for: first-time visitors and guests from out of town.

4. Datia and Sonagiri: a spiritual morning (75 km)

For a short, peaceful outing, visit the Pitambara Peeth in Datia, explore the seven-storey Datia Palace and stop at the white Jain temples of Sonagiri on the hill. You can be back in Gwalior by lunch.

Best for: elders and a relaxed half-day trip.

5. Khajuraho: temple art (280 km)

Khajuraho needs a full weekend. Drive via Jhansi and Chhatarpur, catch the sound and light show in the evening and explore the UNESCO-listed Western Group of temples the next morning. If time allows, visit Raneh Falls or take a safari in Panna National Park.

Best for: art and architecture lovers.

6. Mathura and Vrindavan: the land of Krishna (175 km)

Visit the Krishna Janmabhoomi, the Banke Bihari Temple and the beautifully lit Prem Mandir. Holi and Janmashtami are spectacular, but plan well ahead for festival weekends.

Best for: families and devotees.

7. Chambal: ravines and river life

The Chambal region north of Gwalior surprises many visitors. The National Chambal Sanctuary is home to gharials, crocodiles and river dolphins, and boat safaris are offered at a few points. It is a quiet, unusual getaway for wildlife and bird lovers.

Best for: nature and birdwatching.

How to plan a stress-free weekend

  • Leave early on Saturday to beat the heat and make the most of daylight.
  • Book stays in advance on long weekends and festival dates.
  • Keep the same cab for both days so you are not looking for local transport.
  • Do not overpack the itinerary. One destination per weekend is usually enough.

When to go

October to March is the most comfortable time for all these destinations. In summer, plan early-morning sightseeing and indoor afternoons. The monsoon is beautiful for Shivpuri, Orchha and the Chambal, but allow extra travel time.

Picking a car for a weekend trip

For two to four people, a sedan is comfortable and economical. Families of five or more are happier in an Ertiga, Carens or Innova, and groups of friends can share a Tempo Traveller.

Tell us where you want to go this weekend, and we will suggest a plan and the right car, and share the quote on WhatsApp.
